Okay, this book fucking rules. It's a post-apocalyptic, post-revolution biopunk (lots of mushrooms) story about how being queer is cool.
Basically a gay cop realizes all cops are bastards and that the repressive state she's working for sucks ass, thanks to some help from a pirate crew full of queers and other social outcasts.
The entire setting feels refreshing compared to the typical science fiction or fantasy, including that last one because there's magic handed down by gods, it rules.
There's also literal death and rebirth, and a whole 'realizing the magic was always inside of you', which is a very not subtle cue that the author is trans. And tbqh I instantly like anything more if a trans person made it.
I'm super excited to read the sequel, sincerely, I've had such a great time reading this.
